Universities beaten

PA Wellington Wellington shifted into high gear in the second half to beat New Zealand Universities rugby side, 38-18, at the Hutt Recreation Ground last evening. Trailing 15-12 at half-time and functioning only spasmodically, Wellington hit its straps with some fine tries and put on heavy pressure through the second phase stage of its game.

Wellington scored six tries to two although the students produced some solid forward work and deft back play. Scorers:— Wellington 38 (Damian O’Brien (2), .Nigel Geany, Tracy Smith, Matt Smith, Fraser Mexted tries; Peter O'Shaughnessy 2 penalties, 4 conversions), New Zealand Universities 18 (Manu Otai, Mark Free tries; Mark George 2 conversions, 2 penalties). Half-time 12-15.
