Cyclist in hospital

PA Blenheim Marlborough’s top cyclist, David Duff, was in a critical condition in Wellington Public Hospital yesterday after a training accident near Blenheim on Monday. Duff, aged 19, was training about 4 p.m. on Monday when his foot is believed to have slipped from the pedal and he fell on to his head. After being taken to Wairau Hospital at Blenheim, he was transferred by helicopter to Wellington about 7 p.m. yesterday. He was admitted to the intensive care unit with severe head injuries. Duff was the dual track and road cycling nomination for the 1988 Blenheim Sportsman of the Year award after gaining selection in New Zealand’s aborted tour to Queensland and has represented the province at national meets.
