Flare a meteor?

Reports of a flare over central Christchurch on Monday evening might have been sightings of a meteor, according to the police. Three calls were received from people who said they had seen a flare, coloured red or mauve, a few minutes after 9 p.m. A police spokesman said the reports coincided with another report of a meteor travelling southeast, possibly falling into the sea off Sumner. After checks were made, the police were convinced the sighting was either the meteor or a flare over the central city, and that no ships or boats were in trouble, he said.
