City general manager praises reform structure

Christchurch’s new local government structure would be able to accommodate a wide range of views and principles, said the Christchurch City general manager, Mr John Gray at the annual meeting of the Mount Pleasant Community Centre and Ratepayer’s Association. In three or four years

people who had taken the most extreme and opposite views on the reform would see that both points of view had been accommodated, he said. The new structure allowed the best features of different local body systems to be incorporated. All talents were needed to get people together to

produce something new.

Christchurch would not be a mega city and it had never been suggested that it should be, Mr Gray said. He emphasised the principles of decentralised representation and service delivery centres with maximum delegation to ward committees.
