Hockey international dies

Arthur Mahoney, a former New Zealand hockey captain and Canterbury represenative, died in Masterton recently. Mahoney represented New Zealand in 1926, 1927, 1929, and 1937 when he captained the national team on a tour of Australia. Mahoney learned his

hockey in Christchurch and played for Canterbury from 1920 to 1929. He left the city in 1929 and moved to the North Island. In Christchurch he played for the Selwyn club which had a remarkable run of success in the senior championshp winning 12 consecutive titles from 1918 to 1929.

Mahoney was one of eight Selwyn players included in the Canterbury team in 1926 to play the visiting Indian Army side. A right-half early in his areer, Mahoney moved to full-back in the later stages and it was in that position that he captained New Zealand to a 1-0 win against Australia in Sydney in 1937.

Mahoney also toured Australia in 1927 and was a member of the New Zealand side that drew the only international 3-3 in Brisbane. He neverplayed in a losing side against Australia. In 1929 he was right-half in the New Zealand team that beat Australia 2-0 in Auckland.
