Public open day

The opportunity for the public to come together and enjoy some of the best natural features of Banks Peninsula is being offered on Sunday, April 9, by the Summit Road Society. The society’s autumn outing, the Great Peninsula Walk, is to be an open day for society members and the public alike, offering a four to five hour walk over 12 kilometres of attractive rolling Banks Peninsula countryside. The walk will start from the Summit Road near the Hilltop Tavern and proceed in a westward direction along the line of the originally proposed Summit Road finishing at the saddle above Little River.

At approximately 2000 ft above sea level, including the highest point above Banks Peninsula, the walk

will afford spectacular views to the north, east and south. The native bush and bird life which abounds in this part of the Peninsula will further enhance the enjoyment of the event.

A spokesman for the Summit Road Society believes the walk will appeal to active people of all ages from school children to active senior citizens.

Mount Cook buses will transport walkers to the start of the journey, leaving the Lichfield Street depot at 9.30 a.m. Walking is expected to start around 11 a.m.

Buses will be waiting at the end of the walk to

transport participants back to the city with an expected arrival time at the depot of about 5 to 5.30 p.m. Sturdy outdoor shoes, a protective jacket and lunch including a drink should be taken.

If the weather is too wet, the walk will be postponed till the following Sunday. Postponement notices will be given op Radio 3ZB at 7.30 a.m., 8 a.m. and 8.30 a.m. on Sunday morning.

For those who find the Great . Peninsula Walk whets their appetite for more activity of this kind, the Summit Road Society welcomes new members to the ranks.
