Aust, floods kill 4
NZPA-Reuter Sydney Four people have drowned and three are missing after three days of flooding hit the east coast of Australia, Government officials said yesterday. Hundreds of people were rescued as swirling waters marooned remote villages, destroyed a bridge and cut main highways in New South Wales and Queensland. In Sydney, 106 mm of rain fell during the week-end. Sydney’s
average April rainfall is 126 mm. The police said northern areas of Queensland were bracing for tropical cyclone Aivu. with winds of more than 200km/h. Gale warnings have been issued for a 600 km strip from the northern city of Cairns. All emergency services are on stand-by. Cyclone Aivu could hit the region some time today if it maintained its present course, the police said.
