Tauranga to host world F.D. event
PA Tauranga The world championships for the Olympic two-man Flying Dutchman class will be held in Tauranga in late 1991.
The chairman of the organising committee for the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club, Bob Scott, said up to 70 yachts could be competing.
It will probably be the last major regatta before the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and many of the European competitors would be going to Spain from Tauranga. Mr Scott believes it is only the second time the Dutchman world championships will have been held in the
southern hemisphere. The contest will be open, so countries will not be restricted in the number of entries. He expects about .50 boats from Europe, North America and Japan and a further 20 from New Zealand and Australia.
Scott expects most of New Zealand’s top skippers in the class to be competing. They include the America’s Cup yachtsman, David Barnes, and the Seoul Olympic representative, Murray Jones.
The races will be sailed off Mount Maunganui in waters believed to be similar to those expected in Barcelona.
