Harewood reaches final
Harewood advanced to the final of the Canterbury preseason men’s hockey competition next Saturday when it scored an equaliser 10 minutes from full-time at Porritt Park on Sunday night for a 3-3 draw with Pegasus. Phil Burke, a newcomer to the Harewood squad this season, scored the vital goal which promoted Harewood to the final on goal difference. Pegasus, the winner of the premier championship league and the championship final last season, will now enter a preliminary final against Selwyn tomorrow night. Selwyn beat Redcliffs 3-2 to earn itself a chance to reach
the final. The result was a minor surprise. In the preliminary round Redcliffs had an easy 5-0 win against Selwyn. Harewood scored first against Pegasus when Grant Edwards got his stick to the ball after a melee in the circle but Pegasus had equalised before half-time with a goal by David Grundy. Greg Clark gave Pegasus the lead for the first time early in the second-half but Chris Leslie quickly equalised with a penalty-stroke after a Pegasus defender stopped a high shot in the goal-mouth with his chest.
John Radovonich gave Pe-
gasus the lead a second time from a penalty-corner before Burke brought Harewood level again after a scramble in front of the goal. In the last 10 minutes both teams threw all their efforts into attack and play switched swiftly from end to end with excellent passing and support play and equally strong defence from both teams. University secured a place in the grand final for the bottom four teams in the competition when it beat High School Old Boys 3-1. Old Boys will play Sydenham tomorrow night for the other place in the bottom four final.
