Star qualifiers turn on speed at Rangiora trials

By

JEFF SCOTT

Imperial Tartan and Joe Cool, the two highest priced lots at last year’s National Bloodstock Yearling Sale in Christchurch, were the star qualifiers at yesterday’s Rangiora trials, with the former setting a national 2600 m mobile mark for a juvenile filly.

Imperial Tartan, a halfsister to the C 9 pacer, Imperial Time, finished strongly to win the mobile qualifying heat in 3:26.6 yesterday, well inside the previous best winning time for a two-year-old filly of 3:28.5, set by the John Langdon-trained Rosewood Summit in 1985. A daughter of New Zealand’s leading percentage sire of starters to winners, Smooth Fella, Imperial Tartan, also a half-sister to the C 3 mare, Imperial Kiora, was repurchased by her vendors for $25,000 at last year’s sale. She is raced by her breeders, C. B. Foon and Dr S. 0. Chin of Dunedin, and Derek Jones of Templeton. The latter also trains the filly. Imperial Tartan wore down Ribbonwood Sapphire (4m Dryham LeaRoyal Mail), prepared at Darfield by Geoff Tate, by a nose, the leaders battling over their last 800 m in 63.2. Joe Cool, a two-year-old colt by Smooth Fella from the former open class racemare, In Or Out, was the fastest 2400 m pacing qualifier from a stand yesterday, recording 3:13 for his West Melton trainer, David Butt. A $22,000 purchase last year by Butt’s stable clients, Edward and Caroline Wardwell, Joe Cool dashed to the lead on the home turn and held out a renewed bid for the former pacemaker, Just

Apollo, to win by a length. "He has had five trials

of workouts for three wins and two seconds. He won’t disgrace himself when he starts racing and I just hope he gets better with it,” said Butt. Joe Cool is the fourth foal from In Or Out (12 wins, 1:59.7), the dam also of Laudit (five wins), Lochout (four) and Uncle Andy (one). A halfbrother to this quartet by New York Motoring sold for $25,000 at last month’s International Yearling Sale at Karaka. Just Apollo (3g Apollo’s Way—Just a Flutter), prepared by Arthur Stokes, returned 3:13.2 for second. Others to qualify over 2400 m were: Namesake (3f Besta Fella—Lucky Carlton) in 3:16.1; Deadly Fella (3g Smooth FellaHigh Range) in 3:14.2; and Star Heritage (2f El Patron —Star Nurse) in 3:14.5. Feather Light (5m Honkin Andy—Madam Feather) made a good recovery to win the qualifying trot over 2400 m for trainer, Peter Blackmore, in 3:23.8. Awakite Dal, unsuccessful at Manawatu last month, finished best to win the C2 and faster pace yesterday in 3:26.5 in the hands of Colin de Filippi. Difurn Fella ran on solidly late for second to shade Willem Vink, which was second for much of the run home. Star Kingdom, left in front when the pacemaking Von Luckner tangled under pressure with

400 m to run in the Cl and faster mobile pace, held out a solid finish from Clockwork to record 3:26.6, while Periscope cleared out for an impressive eight-lengths win in the CO mobile heat, returning 3:24.2.
