Time capsule being replaced

The 1932 time capsule removed during the relocation of the Captain Cook statue in Victoria Square will be returned to the base of the statue today. The original contents of the capsule will be replaced along with some articles from 1989. They include copies of the two local newspapers, coins, a $1 and $2 bank note, a Christchurch City Council handbook, a photograph of the Victoria Square redevelopment and a message from the Mayor, Sir Hamish Hay. In his message, Sir

Hamish makes mention of the restructuring taking place under local government reorganisation. The Christchurch City Council in its present form, will cease to exist on October 14, 1989. He said the citizens of Christchurch had experienced the hardships of a recent economic recession with record levels of unemployment in the city. However, economic indicators were for better times ahead. Sir Hamish will replace the capsule in the base of the statue this afternoon.
