Campbell takes cricket award

Catherine Campbell, a late inclusion in the New Zealand women’s cricket team which played in the World Cup in Australia this season, capped off an outstanding season by winning the Canterbury women’s “cricketer of the year” award last evening. Campbell, formerly from Otago, has represented Canterbury since 1983 and has developed into a first-class attacking off-spinner with the ability to obtain sharp spin and deceptive flight.

The St Albans club cricketer replaced an injured Nancy Williams in Australia last December and took nine wickets at modest cost. Her best return was three for 27 off 12 overs against the Netherlands.

Campbell played a big hand in Canterbury retaining the Hansells Cup at the national tournament, claiming 21 wickets and the trophy for the most dismissals.

In club cricket, Campbell took 46 wickets — 12

more than the next best — and she was second in the averages. She took seven for 17 against Lancaster Park and 13 in the match.

As well as being a champion cricketer, Campbell’s sunny disposition and sporting attitude has endeared her to fellow cricketers. '
