Burnsided, Woolston in final

Burnside and Woolston, the two leading teams in the Christchurch women’s hockey competition last season, will meet in the final of the pre-season championship on Friday evening.

Both progressed through their play-offs at Porritt Park yesterday. Burnside beat Carlton 5-0 but Woolston, the runnerup in the national women’s club championship last season, had to battle to beat Hare wood 10.

Burnside had too much control for the young Carlton side. Mary Clinton and her fellow defenders covered well on defence nullifying the attacking abilities of Shirley Haig and Fiona Barnes. The Burnside forwards with more experience and skill, were able to attack from all points of the field and Cairlton struggled to mark their fast and elusive opponents led by Sharon Bell and Kate Trolove.

Bell scored two goals for Burnside and Mary

Clinton, Kieran O’Grady and Leanne McFadden one each. Woolston had an edge on Harewood through most of their game. Its passing was more precise and confident while Harewood lacked the same urgency except for a period in the last five minutes when it made several attacks that threatened to crack the Woolston defence. Sally Ormandy scored the only goal 10 minutes from half-time when the Harewood defence failed to trap a cross and Ormandy was in position to belt the ball into an open goal.

Harewood had its best chance to equalise 10 minutes from full-time from a melee in front of the goal, but a diving save by the goalkeeper, Sharon Amos, saved her side. Both goalkeepers, named in the New Zealand team on Friday, Amos and Elaine Jensen (Harewood), were involved in the game. Jensen played well at

the other end clearing and blocking confidently. Her fellow defender, the left-back, Rachel Petrie, twice saved off the goalline at penalty-corners and made many tackles that halted dangerous Woolston attacks.

In final pool games played during the week Harewood beat Pegasus 41, Carlton beat Selwyn 3-2, and Woolston beat Burnside 1-0 to finish at the top of the preliminary round.

In the first round playoff on Saturday Harewood beat Selwyn 2-1 and Carlton beat Pegasus 5-0.

• Harewood, by virtue of a superior goal difference, finished at the head of the points table after the preliminary round of the Christchurch City Council pre-season men’s hockey competition which finished at Porritt Park on Saturday. Harewood beat Sydenham 7-0 in its final game and finished with 31 goals for and two against, a goal difference of 29. That meant Pegasus had to

beat High School Old Boys by eight clear goals later in the day to finish at the top of the competition. It could only manage a 5-2 win.

Redcliffs secured third place by beating University 2-0 and edging out Selwyn. Selwyn had a real battle on Saturday afternoon to overcome Woolston and eventually won 5-4 to finish fourth in the preliminary round. Other teams in finishing order were University (five points), Old Boys (five points), Woolston (two points) and Sydenham (one point). In other games in the pre-season competition played during the week Pegasus beat Selwyn 2-0, Redcliffs beat Woolston 61, Harewood beat University 5-1 and Old Boys beat Sydenham 3-1. Two quick goals yesterday enabled Sydenham to beat Woolston 3-0. Sydenham will now play the winner of a match between University and Old Boys for a place in the consolation final.
