Sir, —T. E. Moon (March 22) is satisfied with the bond between herself and her children. However, many women who combine outside employment with mothering a young baby express doubt and anxiety at the time and/or regret later about the long-term effects on the child. Such men as dare to talk about such things are often concerned about the difficulty of being aware of and responsive to their children’s needs when outside employment limits the time and energy they have for their children. Too often a mother makes a binding decision to “combine a career with motherhood” before encountering infant dependency first-hand, and before she knows the personality of her individual baby. Every baby needs mothering, but the intensity and duration of dependency varies: a degree of separation that one infant weathers reasonably well will profoundly disturb another. The currently fashionable attitude to motherhood fails to. take this into account.—Yours, etc., ft ' .
