Climbers reach base camp
The New Zealand Everest team of Gary Ball and Rob Hall have arrived at Everest Base camp, ready for their ascent of the mountain’s South Pillar. . The two New Zealanders have teamed up with two Sherpa climbers for the ascent. Mr Ball, speaking from the camp, said the four men would climb as equal partners, without the further Sherpa support that is traditional for larger expeditions. Of the seven teams that are expected to attempt the mountain from the
Nepalese side this season, the New Zealand team is the second to arrive at the base camp at 5500 m. The New Zealand-Sherpa team will climb alone on the South Pillar route, which was pioneered by a Polish team in 1981. Mr Hall said the team was taking a stand on the issue of base camp pollution by back-loading all its non-burnable rubbish. Tin cans and glass will be crushed and carried back down the valley by yaks, to be buried off the glacier.
