Tax on cigarettes increases today

The Government tax on cigarettes goes up 25c on a packet of 20 today.

A director of Rothmans Pall Mall, Mr Owen Morgan, said the Government would take 70 per cent of the cost of a packet of 20 cigarettes. The price of a packet of Rothmans king size goes up to $3.80, and the Government’s share is $2.61.

Mr Morgan said the tax increase was an unfair burden on the one-third of New Zealanders who were smokers, many' of whom were from lower income groups. The Government would take about $7OO million from a selected group, at a time when tax equity and ability to pay was a stated plank of the Government’s policy.
