Recent sex abuse cases for review

PA Wellington Recent cases handled by the Social Welfare Department involving alleged sexual abuse will be reviewed, by a retired Auckland District Court judge, Mr Ken Mason. Mr Mason will review the practices and procedures followed in the cases involving sexual abuse where there have been some problems with the evidence presented in court, the Ministry of Social Welfare announced yesterday. In a recently-reported case, a girl, aged four, was removed from her home as a result of inquiries by Social Welfare workers because of an alleged unsatisfactory environment and a “strong” possibility of sexual abuse by the mother’s de facto husband. • The department persisted with its allegations, even after a departmental psychologist and the police found no evidence of sexual abuse. Court action did not proceed because of a lack of evidence. The terms of reference for the review, which will include the obligations of confidentiality, will be -announced next week and the review will begin
