Notices for seed testing workers
PA Wellington Suspension notices were issued to workers at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries’ seed testing station in Palmerston North yesterday. The station is the only official seed testing station in New Zealand and plays a vital role in trading in seed and grain, particularly the unloading of imported seed. It provides Government certification of seed purity and viability after analysis of seed and grain samples.
The staff have been suspended after beginning industrial action yesterday in an effort to get a better salary structure within Ministry of Agriculture agreement. The number of suspensions was unclear early yesterday afternoon as the notices were still being issued. The Public Service Association said all the centre’s 28 staff faced suspension, but the Ministry said only about eight staff would get notices.
Another four continuing to work would not get notices, a M.A.F. spokeswoman, who did not want to be identified, said.
