N.Z. bid for Olympic Games urged

By

GARY BIRKETT

The manager of the New Zealand team at last year’s Seoul Olympics, Mr Bruce Ullrich, wants this country to bid for the Games to be held in New Zealand in 2000 or 2004.

He was due to put a preliminary proposal to the Minister of External Relations and Trade, Mr Moore, last evening. Mr Ullrich, of Christchurch, said the Olympics were a natural progression from next year’s Auckland Commonwealth Games and the America’s Cup, scheduled for 1991. “Having, seen Seoul I am convinced that something as massive as the Olympics can be run at a profit in New Zealand as long as it is done on a low-key basis. By that I mean by using existing facilities rather than going mad on huge new facilities.”

He said the solution to housing 12,000 athletes and officials lay in the building of a housing estate or condominiums, as was done in Seoul, and selling them after the Games. The logistics of that pointed to Auckland as the Games city. Melbourne is the only southern hemisphere city to have been host for the Games. Mr Ullrich said it was normal for a group of enthusiasts to seek the endorsement of the Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association before making an international bid.
