Allan out for seven weeks

PA Wellington The Melbourne Cup winning jockey, Tony Allan, has been suspended for seven weeks after an appeal against the $BOO fine imposed when he failed to weigh in on Taonganui at Avondale on February 21. The stipendiary stewards submitted that the fine was inadequate both as a deterrent and as reflection of the public interest. Second-placed Toanganui was 1-2 in the betting and its subsequent disqualification cost the owners a $l6OO stake. Allan had committed the same offence on two previous occasions and the committee felt the penalty handed down by the Avondale Jockey Club was inappropriate. The penalty commences after today, to allow Allan to fulfil his declared riding engagements at Ellerslie.
