Quayle snubs N.Z.

NZPA Sydney The United States Vice-Presi-dent, Dan Quayle, will visit Australia in May, but in a deliberate snub to New Zealand will not cross the Tasman, the “Australian” newspaper said yesterday. Mr Quayle announced his visit during an interview with Reuters news agency.

“My brother and my mother and father have all been to Australia. I haven’t,” Mr Quayle

said. “It’s a very important ally.”

The “Australian” said: “The same does not go for New Zealand, which remains a diplomatic leper in Washington because of the. Lange Government’s stand against the entry of nuclear ships to its ports.” Mr Quayle’s visit to Australia will be the first vice-presidential tour since George Bush visited the country in 1982. It will precede a visit to Washington by the Australian Prime Minister, Bob Hawke, in July.
