New presenter for ‘The Mainland Touch’

Television New Zealand’s revamped news presentation will begin on Monday, bringing a new face to Canterbury viewers — that of Alison Jones, the new presenter of the regional programme, “The Mainland Touch.” With no newsreading experience, Ms Jones is relaxed about her new role after rehearsal this week, but knows she will feel excited and nervous when the camera rolls for real on Monday. Ms Jones, aged 21, was born in England and has lived in Christchurch since she was nine. After leaving Christchurch Girls’ High School, she worked as a floor manager with the Court Theatre for 18 months, then
years as a floor manager for TVNZ before her news-reading abilities were discovered only weeks ago. She will replace Bob Sutton, one of six Christchurch news staff to lose their jobs in the reorganisation of news services taking effect on Monday. Ms Jones also realises she will have
to win over an audience not noted for tolerance of change to “their” programmes. She said she hoped to appeal to the viewers who have been loyal to Bob Sutton and John Dunne before him, and pull in a younger audience as well. Apart from the new face, the regional programme will be shorter and earlier, and switch to Network Two.
