Three sides unbeaten
Te Aute College (Hawke’s Bay), one of the legendary nurseries of secondary school rugby, is now carving itseif a niche in softball. The college side is one of three unbeaten combinations after the first day of the New Zealand boys’ and girls’ secondary schools’ softball finals, being played at Bumside High School. The top six boys’ teams and leading six girls’ sides that have qualified from regional tournaments are in Christchurch for the three-day play-offs. The competitions are being conducted on a round-robin basis. Te Aute College and Rotorua Lakes High School are the unbeaten boys’ teams after day one, and the only girls’ side to win twice was Mana College, of Porlrua. Results:— Boys.—Rotorua Lakes H.S. 9, Birkenhead College (North Harbour) 7; Aotea College (Porirua) 12, Timaru B.H.S. 11; Te Aute College 8, Cargill H.S. (Invercargill) 3; Birkenhead 6, Timaru 0; Rotorua Lakes 6, Cargill 4; Te Aute 14, Aotea 4. Girls.—Timaru G.H.S. 9, Melville H.S. (Waikato) 3; Parkway College (Wainuiomata) 20, James Hargest H.S. (Invercargill) 6; Mana College 11, Birkenhead 1; James Hargest 4, Melville 3; Mana 10, Timaru 9; Birkenhead 14, Parkway 8.
