Weather radar to be installed
PA Wellington New Zealand’s first weather surveillance radar, costing about $2 million, will be installed north of Auckland to provide readings for the top half of the North Island. The Minister in Charge of the Meteorological Service, Mr Jeffries, said the units would give weather forecasters a much greater depth of weather information.
The first unit, being installed on Mount Tamahuhga, near Leigh, would scan an area covering Northland, Greater Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato and northern Bay of Plenty. Eventually, there would be five units covering all New Zealand, Mr Jeffries said in a statement.
