South Westland
Sir,—While the Government is to be congratulated for its enlightened stance in protecting the magnificent indigenous forests of South Westland, it must now have doubts about the wisdom of giving the narrow-minded local bodies of- the area more say in our future. In bowing their heads for a moment’s silence at their recent meeting (March 18) because of the protection afforded the forests, the Westland County Council clearly displays a puerile attitude which the Government surely cannot foster. The attitude of the council is no more enlightened than the Flat Earth Society of yesteryear. As a result of such frivolous action, I believe the bulk of the population should continue to press even harder for change, leaving such elements languishing in their cocoons.— Yours, etc., COUN I. FUSSELL. March 25, 1989.
