Montazeri steps aside
NZPA-Reuter Nicosia Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeiny, leading a new wave of militancy in Iran’s 10-year Islamic revolution, has prompted the resignation of his moderate successor-desig-nate, Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri. Iran’s official media issued extracts yesterday from an exchange of letters in which Ayatollah Montazeri, aged 66, said he was unfit for the burden of supreme leadership and wanted to return to the simple life of a theology teacher. Ayatollah Khomeiny, aged 86, accepted, saying he had thought all along that Ayatollah Montazeri, a reluctant candidate, was not the right man for the job.
Ayatollah Montazeri’s departure marked a high point in political manoeuvres in Teheran over the last few months
No alternative to Ayatollah Montazeri has emerged, however, and Iran’s Constitution makes it possible that the future leadership may not be clearly settled in Ayatollah Khomeiny’s lifetime.
