Draughts
There is nothing as uncomfortable or as cold as a draughty house. 111-fitting window frames and doors, cracks in outside walls, unused chimneys and gaps around pipes all add up to bringing the winter inside.
A wide range of easy-to-use fillers suitable for every purpose ’are available as are screw draught excluders to cover the gap between door and floor.
Many draughts are caused by poor house design. The front or back door may be so positioned
that when opened a gust of cold wind is funnelled through. Usually, however, it is a fairly simple matter to relocate the door on another wall or corner and to build a sheltering porch around it.
Easier than that, and depending on circumstances, a thick hedge or one or two trees or a closely boarded strip of fencing or even ■ a creeper-covered trellis may be all that is needed to break the force of the wind against the house.
