Trophy hat-trick for St Albans
St Albans scored its third successive triumph in the Trust Bank Trophy club cricket competition by beating Marist outright at Warren Park on Saturday.
After conceding first innings points to its rival St Albans made sure its closest pursuers, Old Collegians and East Christ-church-Shirley, would not pip it on the last day of the season by dismissing Marist for 150 in its second innings. The defending champion finished the season with 81 points, 12 points clear of Old Collegians with five points back to East Shirley. A six-wicket bag by the Canterbury left-arm spin bowler, Mark Priest, pushed St Albans to a comfortable win over Marist. It was as well for the side that it won for Old Collegians and East Shirley were both denied by one wicket from taking outright points over High School Old Boys and Bumside-West University. Scores: St Albans 183/7 dec. and 232/2 dec. beat Marist 184/6 dec. and 156.
Lancaster Park 251 and 112 drew with Riccarton 180/4 dec. and 136/7. Woolston W.M.C. 144 and 231/8 dec. beat Sydenham 147/4 dec. and 192.
East Shirley 320/9 dec. and 72/5 dec. drew with Burnside West 161/4 dec. and 165/9. Old Collegians 241 and 115/5 dec. drew with High School Old Boys 169/6 dec. and 161/9. Final points: St Albans 81, Old Collegians 69, East Shirley 64, Lancaster Park 56, Woolston S 3, Burnside West 49, Riccarton 48, Marist 38, Sydenham 33, Old Boys 18.5.
The Sydenham and Canterbury all-rounder, Richard Petrie, recorded the day’s highest score with 96 while David Boyle, of Bumside West, was undefeated on 91.
Others to pass 50 were Anup Nathu (Woolston), Darrin Murray (Sydenham), Russell Haglund (Burnside West), Paul McEwan (Old’Collegians), Peter Rattray (Old Boys), Tim Murdoch (Riccarton), David Stead (Riccarton), Gary Rae (St Albans), Grant Lucas (St Albans) and Ben Harris (St Albans). Priest took the bowling honours with six for 65 while Andrew Caddick (Riccarton) and Tony Gray (East Shirley), also grabbed five wicket bags. SPIN WIN It would not surprise many that Mark Priest and Andy Nuttall should spin St Albans to a match and championship victory at Warren Park. Set 232 to win in 127 min and 20 overs, Marist succumbed to the turn and bounce of the leftarm pairing, and there were 13 overs left unbowled when the last wicket fell.
Neil Francis again displayed his sporting bent with the realistic offer. Marist would have had 62 overs to score what St Albans had achieved from 53 overs in its second innings.
With current season century-makers in Garry MacDonald (thrice), Greg Hills and Kit Perera, Marist must have fancied its chances, especially after making sure of first innings points after only 15 min in the morning, without further loss and MacDonald reaching 121.
St Albans was made to sweat a little at one stage when the side dropped two catches and conceded four boundaries from six balls. But then three wickets, the fourth, fifth and sixth, fell with the score at 95 and from there Priest and Nuttall pressed home the advantage remorselessly. Priest had the first five wickets to fail, including in his performance a brilliant caught-and-bowled, low down to his left, to dismiss Andrew Haglund. Perera, Hills and MacDonald were among his victims. Nuttall chipped in more than usefully, removing Marist’s top scorer, Mike
Eady, and snuffing out the lower-order resistance.
St Albans’ second innings effort was again built on the rock of Grant Lucas, who batted for 194 min to score 75. Gary Rae (62 from 80 balls) helped Lucas fashion a first wicket stand of 100. Lucas took his season’s . tally from two-day games to 664.
Ben Harris, who fin-
ished with St Albans’ next best aggregate but more than 200 runs behind Lucas, stroked 52 from 70 balls. DESPERATE FINISH Old Collegians made a valiant effort to match St Albans on points. At the close of play Old Boys was nine for 161, needing 188 for victory. Old Boys played its part too; the scoring rate, at a shade over four runs an over, was beyond them, but they made a brave effort to get the runs. Old Boys, in its first innings, batted until 20 minutes after lunch, the 170 minutes producing 132 runs, until Paul Hartland declared.
Old Boys needed 142 to avoid the follow-on. The resistance chief was Peter Rattray, who added 58 for the fifth wicket with Ross Bayliss. Rattray, in his last game for the club after 12 successful seasons, scored a pleasant 63, marked by his fine driving and hooking. Bayliss also played many assertive shots in his 42 not out.
.In desperate anxiety to score runs quickly, Old Collegians had some fiery bowling from Stu Roberts and the accurate mediumpacers of Brett Saunders to contain them. But Paul McEwan faced 49 balls in scoring 64 not out, including 11 fours. He was in majestic form, hitting the ball all over the cricketing compass, with confident driving, savage pulling and always eager to go over the top. Old Boys had 90 minutes and the last 20 overs to score 188.
Some demanding bowling from Richard Wilson was chiefly responsible for a mini-collapse. But Blair Hartland and Cran Bull recovered in a stand of 37 for the fourth wicket, and Old Boys seemed to be out of dan-
ger. Bull, with a fine flourish to his driving, batted beautifully and Bret Saunders gave the fieldsmen a chase later in the innings, against some tempting slow bowling. Old Boys lost wickets late in the day, but was seldom in danger of defeat; Robert, the ninth wicket to fall, was confounded by a gigantic heave, facing the last ball of the day. BAD LIGHT East Shirley made a spirited bid for outright points against BurnsideWest University at Burwood Oval but poor light and a stubborn last-wicket partnership between David Boyle and Scott Willan thwarted its hopes. After securing first innings points East Shirley set Burnside West a target of 232 for victory in ample time but its chase got off to the worst possible start when Jon Preston went first ball.
It progressed to 103 for five in good time but then the rot set in. Four wickets fell in the space of two runs and the ninth man, Steve Hawker, was out at 127.
Willan then joined David Boyle and proceeded to hold up one end in confident fashion, with Boyle farming as much of the strike as possible. They combatted the wiles of Tony Gray and Bruce Murray most effectively, although Willan had one life when Mark Robinson spilled a chance close-in. When bad light stopped play with four of the last 20 overs left, Boyle had made 91, including 12 fours, from 177 balls.
Gray recorded his third five-wicket bag of the season with five for 45 while Murray was also impressive, getting three for 59.
Earlier, Burnside West had started its first innings at 1 p.m. after water had damaged the pitch. Its captain, Russell Haglund, reached 54 before declaring 159 runs behind.
East Shirley blazed away for 8.1 overs to reach 72 for five with
some big hitting from Ray Jones and Murray. SURPRISE COLLAPSE After Riccarton’s David Stead and Tim Murdoch had batted in the morning with ease and confidence
on Hagley Three the collapse of the Lancaster Park batting in the postlunch session came as a surprise. Indeed, had it not been for a ninth wicket partnership of 33 from Trevor Luke and Wayne Allport Riccarton might have won the game.
Both Murdoch and Stead batted attractively, Murdoch turning the ball
off his legs with good timing and Stead playing in front of the wicket with assurance.
Together they scored 124 with Stead being the more aggressive, hitting his 64 off 103 balls and striking 11 boundaries.-
Lancaster Park batted with little application and lost the first eight wickets for 76 against the lively medium pace of Andrew Caddick and Dennis Aberhart. Caddick made the ball lift disconcertingly while Aberhart confused the batsmen with movement off the seam.
Luke and Allport, however, looked in little trouble when they came together and by batting through the tea break set Riccarton the task of scoring 174 in 32 min plus the final 20 overs. Stu Gambles set his team well on the way, hitting his 32 off as many balls and running well between the wickets but when he left at 54 Riccarton’s chase all but ended. Mark Chamberlain and Luke proved as penetrative and hard to score from as did their Riccarton medium pace counterparts but the final breakthrough eluded them and the game was abandoned in the last over with Riccarton 38 runs in arrears. WOOLSTON WINS
The final rites of the 1988/89 season at Sydenham Park were played out to all but the last over and in a manner that was as exciting as it was somewhat unexpected, when Woolston Workingmen’s Club toppled the home side in the second innings to achieve a deserved victory by 36 runs.
At the start of the day Sydenham needed only 53 runs for first innings points and once this was achieved the declaration was made thus laying the
foundations for a most interesting finale. The top scorer was Darrin Murray, whose undefeated knock of 62 included 10 boundaries. The only two wickets to fall on the day were 1 both taken by Tim Andrews for only 26 runs. Woolston’s second innings was positive throughout. While Anup Nathu played his customary anchorman’s role, Julian Marsh, Peter Sullivan, Gary Gardner and Greg Lewis hit far and wide. Paul Bulman was particularly ill treated, Kennedy being harsh on anything loose. Nathu’s eighth 50-plus innings of the season saw him stay around until 175 runs were scored and his side well positioned for a realistic declaration, although some Sydenham supporters considered the target a little too awesome. As it eventuated, however, Nathu timed it to a nicety, the home team’s last wicket falling with only nine balls of the match remaining. To keep the game alive, Nathu was forced to feed runs and Richard Petrie took full advantage of what was offered. His entertaining knock of 96 runs came from only 98 balls. Four sixes and 14 fours — 80 runs in boundaries — were included in his highest senior innings. But apart from Ash Hart, who shared a fifth wicket partnership of 108 runs in only 62 minutes, the batting crumbled against the accurate bowling of Tim Andrews and Jerry Bramble.
