Triple disaster leaves 80,000 homeless

NZPA-AP Blantyre, Malawi' Floods, an earthquake and a cyclone have left at least 80,000 and perhaps as many as 110,000 people homeless in the landlocked southern African country of

Malawi, says the Government. Freak winds wrecked the homes of about 24,000 people, ripping roofs off buildings, uprooting trees and flattening crops in the northern district of Karonga, a Government

spokesman said yesterday. Reports of the cyclone reached Blantyre as the Government mounted a rescue operation to resettle 56,000 people hit by floods and an earthquake that flattened houses in central

and southern districts already weakened by floods. Falling masonry crushed two people to death in the earthquake at Salima, in central Malawi which damaged the homes of 800 people.

Six others were reported drowned in the floods. The spokesman, who by custom was not identified, said the cyclone struck several days ago, but no reports of casualties had been received
