Chile holds Japanese boats

NZPA-AFP Valparaiso The Chilean Navy has seized five Japanese fishing boats in Chilean ports yesterday, saying the vessels would be held until Japan resumed buying Chilean grapes.

Admiral Jose Toribio Merino, commander-in-

chief of the Navy, criticised Japan for following the United States’ lead in suspending Chilean fruit imports. "Chile is going to look for new markets,” said Admiral Merino. “We are going to continue selling and whoever wants to do business with

us has to buy.” “And so to the Japanese who have closed their markets to Chilean fruit, I am holding their fishing boats in port,” he said. Japanese Embassy officials in Santiago could not be reached for comment.
