Statistics of new city revealed in profile
A social profile of the new enlarged Christchurch City shows it will be 91 per cent European, 5 per cent Maori, 1 per cent Polynesian, 1 per cent Chinese and 2 per cent other nationalities. The profile uses 1986 Census statistics. They show the ethnic origins of residents as European 261,927, Maori, European Maori 13,578, Polynesian, Euoprean Polynesian 3674 and Chinese 3480. Forty-nine per cent of residents are male (139,542) and 51 per cent female (148,002). • The bulk of the population (57 per cent) fails within the 18 to 59 age group, 26 per cent are younger, 17 per cent older.
Eighty-six per cent of new city residents are New Zealanders born in this country. Other birthplaces listed are Britain and Ireland 8 per cent, Europe 2 per cent and Australia, Asia and the Pacific Islands 1 per cent each. The social profile shows that 74 per cent of these people live in houses, 25 per cent in apartments and 1 per cent in other accommodation. Occupation groups show that the largest section (37 per cent) work in production and transport, 18 per cent in clerical, 17. per cent in professional and technical areas, 10 per cent are sales workers, 9 per cent service workers and 6 per cent administrators or managers.
