Clark’s attitude unfair —surgeon
PA Auckland The refusal by the Minister of Health, Ms Clark, to accept responsibility for brain tumour patients denied surgery “seems a little unfair,” says an Auckland neurosurgeon, Chris Furneaux. Ms Clark said in Parliament on Thursday that the onus of surgical waiting lists rested with the surgeon concerned. Mr Furneaux has on his acute list two brain tumour patients whose surgery have been cancelled repeatedly because of a shortage of theatre nurses. He has warned that further budget cuts, as proposed by the Auckland Area Health Board, will see such situations become far more prevalent. “This will not be an isolated incident if health cuts continue,” Mr Furneaux said. He declined further comment “in the interests of my patients.” Mr Barry Hagen, who has six times had his surgery cancelled, has been told to return to Auckland Hospital on Monday.
