be used in less open country, without the necessity of line-of-sight visibility from one survey mark to another. The devices were already in use for the department’s final mapping of Fiordland, where the terrain dictates the use of helicopters to get survey teams in and out of the field. The speed of the new system would dramatically cut the amount of expensive helicopter time, said Mr Grant.
