Prison population being monitored —Palmer

PA Wellington The Minister of Justice, Mr Palmer, said yesterday the increase in prison occupancy could lead to difficulties in the prison system later this year. Mr Palmer said the situation was being “carefully monitored.’’ On March 10 there were 3397 people held in penal institutions, an increase of 221 on the same time last year. Our prisons now hold 3261 men, including 361 on remand and 136 women, 17 on remand. Last year prison overcrowding resulted in prisoners being held in remand cells at police stations, instead of going to prisons.

Some offenders who had been sentenced to short terms of imprisonment saw out their entire sentence at police stations and never actually got to jail.
