It is a new position resulting from a reorganisation within the School of Medicine. Basic molecular genetics is taught extensively within the precllnical part of the course. However, clinical genetics is poorly developed within both the undergraduate programme and clinical service. The appointee is .expected to demonstrate leadership in developing clinical genetics teaching and service, and will take responsibility for these. Laboratory based genetic services are well developed in Auckland, both within the University s various departments and through the Auckland Area Health Boards services. Candidates must hold a medical qualification registrable in New Zealand together with a recognised postgraduate qualification in Clinical Genetics and should preferably have had some experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical students. They must be able to demonstrate ability to undertake and sustain research activities in clinical genetics. The duties will include the teaching of clinical genetics at the undergraduate level, contributions to graduate courses for MSc (Med Sc) students and assistance in postgraduate teaching courses in the School of Medicine. The appointee will head a newly formed section of clinical genetics and will be expected to develop interactions with those departments teaching molecular and precllnical genetics. A 5/10 clinical commitment to one or more Auckland Area Health Board institutions is required. It is hoped that the successful candidate will take up the position as early as possible in 1989. Commencing salary will be established within the range of $NZ64,000 to SNZB3,OOO per annum. The successful applicant will join a research programme in the Department of Microbiology and Genetics aimed at developing transformation and gene replacement techniques in the ryegrass endophyte Acremonium loliae. The position will be available for up to two years. Applicants should have a Ph.D in an appropriate discipline with experience in Molecular Genetics or Biochemistry. POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP Animal Science Department A postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Animal Science, supervised by Drs H.T. Blair and S.N. McCutcheon, to conduct physiological studies of the regulation of seasonal wool growth in Romney sheep. This project, which is part of a col* laborative research programme will investigate the physiological mechanisms by which genetic variation in seasonality of wool growth (particularly the winter decline) is expressed. Studies will be based on the University fleeceweight selection lines which exhibit marked genetic variation in seasonality. Applicants should be experienced in the study of whole body and/or tissue metabolism, particularly as it relates to utilisation of amino acids for wool growth and/or endocrine regulation of wool growth. The annual emolument payable for Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is currently $35,000 p.a. and the Fellowship is tenable for a maximum period of up to two years.
