Empire Rose’s owner dies
PA Hamilton Fred Bodie, ownerbreeder of the Melbourne Cup winner Empire Rose, died suddenly in Hamilton on Thursday night.
Mr Bodie, who had much success with the stock of his Whakanui Stud, near Cambridge, suffered a heart attack only months after his great mare gave him his biggest thrill in racing. In November, Empire Rose scored a marvellous Melbourne double in the L K S MacKinnon Stakes
and the Melbourne Cup. As well as Empire Rose, Mr Bodie saw many other top gallopers come out of Whakanui Stud, including Turf Ruler, Happy Union, Sulieman and Philomel.
Summerosa, the 1973 Waikato Gold Cup winner, was also raced by him. Mr Bodie was actively involved with the Waikato Racing Club. He was president for five years and also held posts as treasurer and vice-presi-dent.
