Protestants bowled
Fittingly, the Catholics beat the Protestants in a St Patrick’s Day charity bowls tournament at the Canterbury Bowling Club yesterday.
The- ranks of the Catholics contained such sporting celebrites as Tom Doocey, the international rugby referee, Jim Fisher, a former rugby league representative forward at national level, and Pat Doig, a New Zealand fours bowls champion. Inspired by the presence of "the Pope,” who blessed the tournament, the left-footers surged ahead to win the fours competition. The successful side donated its winnings of $B2O to the Cot Death Society, the charity of its choice.
