No N.Z. trace of danger

SARONA IOSEFA

Chilean grapes contaminated with cyanide are not known to have been imported to New Zealand. The United States Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning that Chilean grapes should not be eaten. The red seedless grapes had been shipped to the United States from Chile

and the fruit was found to have been tampered with. The motivation was believed to have been political. The assistant manager of the Health Department’s health protection programme, Mr Len Weldon, said, “As far as we know these grapes have not been imported into New Zealand. We are in touch with importers here

and also with the authorities through our embassy in Washington.” A senior health protection officer for the Christchurch health development unit, Mrs Karen Brooks, said fewer checks on imported foods meant the health units had no idea whether Chilean grapes were en route to New Zealand. No written records were kent.
