Farming
Sir,—Your headlines on the front page, of March 8 reporting the findings of a Christchurch psychologist, Mr Ants Parder, certainly accurately describe the despondency and despair among farming people in New Zealand. His contention that some farmers will buy their neighbours’ holdings at rock-bottom prices, however, gives a misleading picture. Of the 20 or so farms sold in this area during the last two years only one has been bought by a New Zealand farmer. The rest have been shared by Australians, Americans, businessmen or professional folk. For a Government which repeatedly and ardently promised that “no competent farmer would be forced off the land,” Labour politicians are now remaining very quiet, but the shame of their destruction of a vigorous and productive farming industry will be associated with the Lange Government for the years ahead. — Yours, etc., G. A. INCH. March 10, 1989.
