The Trust Bank Trophy two-day club cricket competition enters its final round today with three teams still bidding for the championship. St Albans (69 points), Old Collegians (65) and East Christchurch-Shirley (60) are all in contention, although the first two sides appear to have a slight advantage. East-Shirley needs at least 12 points from an outright win over Bumside-West University at Burwood Oval and must hope that the other sides are beaten on the first innings and fail to secure outright points.. Old Collegians, which has climbed swiftly up the table with two successive outright wins, plays High School Old Boys at Hagley 1.
It welcomes back Paul McEwan while Wayne Martin is over a shoulder injury. The captain, Richard Leggat, said apart from failing to get maximum points when in a winning position against Riccarton in the sixth round, the second half of the season had gone well for his side. He said High School Old Boys should be looking for outright points to climb from bottom place and that could lead to a positive attitude from its rival.
St Albans, bidding for three successive titles, meets Marist at Warren Park, traditionally a strip that does little to help the bowlers.
St Albans will rely heavily on its Canterbury representative spin bowlers, Andrew Nuttall (34 wickets in six club games) and Mark Priest (28 wickets in five games), while Brett Harrison will share the new ball with Roger Ford. The captain, Neil Francis, said that the former Canterbury batsman, Max Bremner, is not available, having left for a coaching stint in the Netherlands.
He is replaced by Gary Rae, who has scores of 67, 4, 89, and 71 since coming into the side. Rhys Cain will play as a specialist batsman with Paul Rutledge keeping wickets.
Francis said Marist played the game in good spirit and was sure that it would respond to any challenge set in the match.
He is excited by the prospects of the next two Saturdays. “It is good that the season comes down to the last game again. We will be keeping a close eye on the games across town but will be playing positively as we have all season.”
