Govt confusion ‘causing dismay’
Confusion in both the Government and the Opposition is causing dismay about politics for many people, said the former Minister of Finance, Mr Roger Douglas. Addressing a convention in Wellington, Mr Douglas said that in spite of the confusion, it should be “a piece of cake” for Labour to win the 1990 election.
“All the Government has to do is face up to the rest of the job and get on with it.
“In other words, do what we promised in the 1987 election campaign.” People had seen the Government behave competently in its first term in office, but now could not understand why it was not doing so “when it really matters.” The New Zealand economy would not improve without competitive policies, but the Government did not appear to recognise it was not pursuing a course which would improve economic competitiveness, Mr Douglas said.
