Celebration turns nightmare

PA Auckland A double celebration turned into a nightmare for the occupants of a West Auckland flat on Saturday evening night when their home went up in flames. All that remained of the Avondale building was a blackened shell. Three flatmates, Sarah Wood, Tom Kenny, and his wife, Debbie, were enjoying a party.

Ms Wood said her son, Russell, aged 3, held a candle to sing “happy birthday” to his grandmother. He disappeared to his room before returning to ask that the candle be lit again. “His door was slightly ajar and someone saw smoke.
