Taxation
Sir, —How can Mr Caygill have the nerve to raise GST and personal and company tax when what is really needed is a cut in Government spending? Does he not realise that the people who pay the taxes are leaving the country in droves — 80,000 in five years, and more will surely follow if he imposes higher taxes. There are too few people providing the dollars for too many on social welfare. What New Zealand needs is a huge increase in population, preferably from Europe; people who will bring their skills with them and so increase the production of food and clothing and the construction of housing, etc., — Yours, etc., P. JAMES. February 28, 1989.
