Waitangi fixation —Bolger

By

PETER LUKE,

political reporter Race problems will not be solved by a fixation about how to interpret “that 150-year-old document — the Treaty of Waitangi,” said the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, yesterday. He repeated his call for a review of the Waitangi Tribunal’s functions when he spoke in Wanganui. “We are not prepared to go down the path towards some twin system of justice or government that either advantages or disadvantages Maori people compared to any other New Zealander,” he said. Historic grievances over land had to be addressed. “But they have to be addressed squarely by the Government of the day, not through some protracted legal process,” Mr Bolger said. “Some of the claims are so massive in scale that a finding totally in favour of the claimant would cripple the economy.” Separatists, page 8
