Fame for Jitterbugs

PA Auckland Waitemata litterbugs may soon find fame they do not want. A Waitemata City Council committee chairman has said the Courts were now treating littering seriously and the council would publish the names of all people convicted of littering. The council’s general purposes committee has been told by the city’s lawyers that it was to

publish names, but extra care should be taken with spellings of names and addresses. The committee’s chairman, Mr Roger Keen, said a number of successful prosecutions over recent months indicated the courts were prepared to treat rubbish-dumping offenders seriously. A list tabled at the meeting gave names of people fined up to $225

for leaving rubbish bags in public places, $125 for leaving rubbish on private land, $325 for not putting up a fence to screen rubbish on their own land and $325 for not complying with orders from a litter control officer. Mr Keen said another factor which irked the council was that most of the offenders came from outside Waitemata to dump rubbish bags.
