Chch beer for Japan

An export order for Steinlager beer bound for Japan and valued at more than $500,000 is being filled by New Zealand Breweries’ Christchurch plant. Mr Kerry McCashin, the Christchurch’s plant manager, said it was the first export order that Christchurch had received. The firm had decided to take the pressure off its Auckland branch which was already dealing with heavy export orders for Canada, . the U.S. and Britain.
“We’re hoping it won’t be the last order of this size because it does do a lot for the local branch to be able to work at such intense pace,” Mr McCashin said.
No new jobs would be created by the sudden boost.
Asahi Breweries, Ltd, has exclusive rights to distribute the beer to its 1000 Japanese outlets. Mr McCashin said packaging machinery at the plant had been adjusted to cope with differing standards dictated by the Japanese firm.
It had ordered 24 loose cans a carton. For the New Zealand market sixpacks of cans, high conebottle six packs, and can trays were the norm. The order was filed about three weeks ago for completion on Tuesday.
