Prisoner sets fire to cell bedding
PA Palmerston North A sentenced prisoner was rescued from a cell fire at the Palmerston North Police Station yesterday — the second such fire in 15 months. Senior-Sergeant Paula Stevens said a prisoner awaiting transport from the station allegedly set, fire to his bedding at 8.15 a.m.
The police dragged the prisoner, who had suffered some effects from smoke inhalation, outside, where he was seen to by ambulance officers. He was not taken to hospital. Senior-Sergeant Stevens said the police found the prisoner lying on the ground in his cell. The police put out the fire, and the Fire Service was not called.
