Train hits man taking short-cut
PA Wellington A man killed at the Wellington Railyards yesterday was the eighth pedestrian in the region to be hit by a train in the last year and the fifth fatality. The police said yesterday that the man was cutting across the tracks opposite the Hutt Park Tasman Liquor store on his way to work when the accident happened. He was Peter Lawrence Thompson, aged 24, a labourer, of Wellington.
He was heading toward the harbour and stopped for a south-bound unit, but then tried to leap the tracks in front of the 6.25 a.m. unit to Porirua, approaching from his right. The train hit him and he was hurled 11 metres. He died at the scene. Trains were delayed for 45 minutes while the police investigated the scene and interviewed the driver of the unit. Fourteen services were cancelled and thousands of commuters were forced to take later units.
