Protestors occupy drilling rig
PA Wellington Police arrested a man and “quite a bit of damage” was done to a drilling rig yesterday after about 30 protesters occupied farmland on the Coromandel, police said.
Barrack Mines and the landowner requested . police assistance ,yester- . day morning after pro - testers moved on to ! 1 mining rig drilling on th' e outskirts of Black Jac k reserve at Kuaotunu nort h of Whitianga.
It was the fifth tirr ie protesters blockaded tt ie rig in five weeks. They moved on to t! he property about 3 a.r n., Senior-Sergeant Ga ,ry Hodge said from Wh itianga.
After six police arrb zed about 2 p.m. protest ers were asked to leave : and get off the rig as t hey were trespassing. Force was used to p rise two men from the rig and one man was arrestee 1 for trespassing, Senior- -Sergeant Hodge said.
Protesters then dec :ided they had proved their point and left after the landowner spoke to t hem, he said. Protesters were o n the rig from 6 a.m. unti 1 3.30 p.m. yesterday.
