Books blown up

PA Wellington Army explosive experts blew up a suitcase of religious texts which had sparked a bomb scare in Melrose, Wellington on Thursday night. Police cordoned off a road for more than four hours while explosives experts using a robot investigated the suspicious looking suitcase, which had been left on the upper balcony of a house. But the case was found to contain nothing more lethal than church books. Two neighbouring houses were evacuated

and nearby residents arriving home had to wait for several hours before the police allowed them to go up the road. The police said the owners of the house, an elderly men and his wife, were expecting the books to be dropped off by a local priest. But they were suspicious when they arrived home to find the heavy suitcase. An Army bomb disposal team was called in and after several hours a small explosive device was set off next to the suitcase.
